Religion, Politics, and Your Kid’s Stupid Face: My Unspeakable Commentary
Wednesday, October 15th, 2008
I’m not really going to write about those things you’re not supposed to write about, but I do want to touch on some current events, because being alive right now has produced in me that strange feeling that I’m living through history. With all the wacky stock market activity and climate change and George W. Bush bloop-bloppers, so much of what’s happening right now seems like it’ll remain relevant for years to come. So, here’s a bit of what I did today and how it affected my observation of the universe.
Oh, by the way, this probably won’t be funny. If humor is what you’re after, may I suggest pondering the randomness of the universe under a cold night sky.
Anyhow, my roompal Rick and I went down to the local Balboa Theatre, where they were showing today’s presidential debate on a movie screen. I was pleased to see the auditorium packed to the rafters, though my enthusiasm soon waned. You see, I live in San Francisco, a city as partisan as Assfuck, Arkansas. What the entirety of the auditorum would do would be to pay attention to what Barack Obama had to say, even cheering at his televised image after he finished, but they would totally ignore everything John McCain had to say. I found this unapologetic closed-mindedness to be very off-putting. I actually felt like I was in Assfuck, Arkansas.
You see I believe in fairness, and I believe in listening to what people you can’t stand have to say. As long as you’re not being directly threatened, sure. These people sure were intolerant for progressive liberals. How can you have such a negative impression of someone you aren’t listening to? I’ve lived in rural Texas, and the people in both rural Texas and San Francisco have far more in common than either of them would be pleased to admit.
Having said that, Obama creamed McCain, and looking at the situation from someone else’s eyes, I think a few key individuals (namely the voters who are inexplicably undecided this far into the campaign) will have been impressed with Obama’s clear ability to lead during a time when this country needs leadership. Real leadership, not “fuck it” leadership. Jeez, I hope this works.
Author’s Note: If you live in Assfuck, Arkansas, I mean not to disparage your community. I’m sure there’s a hilarious story as to the origin of your town’s name, and next time I’m in Arkansas I’ll show my support for your community and have breakfast at the Assfuck Diner.
